Chatsworth House Trust is a registered charity established in 1981 to look after the house and its collections, garden, woodlands, and park for the benefit of everyone. Every penny from tickets sales, Gift Aid, membership, sponsorship, grants and donations goes directly to the Trust to be reinvested in the preservation and improvement of Chatsworth, its learning and outreach programme. At the top is a plateau of several square miles of lakes, woods and moorland. There are public paths through the area and Chatsworth offers guided tours with commentary in a 28-seater trailer pulled by a tractor.

The Settlement runs the four shops and the catering operations at Chatsworth, paying a percentage of turnover to the charitable Chatsworth House Trust in lieu of rent. It also runs the Devonshire Arms Hotel and the Devonshire Fell Hotel & Bistro on the Bolton Abbey estate and owns the Cavendish Hotel at Baslow, on the edge of Chatsworth Park, which is let to a tenant. The old kitchen garden at Barbrook on the edge of the park is let to the Caravan Club; a paddock at the south end of the park where bucks were fattened for Chatsworth's table is a tenanted garden centre.

You can still see the Hunting Tower, built in the 1580s, on the hill above the House. There’s nothing better (in my opinion) than visiting mansions and estates at Christmas. If for nothing else, an overdose of Christmas decorations is guaranteed to get you in the Christmas spirit.
The land was part of a Spanish land grant, Rancho Ex-Mission San Fernando, in the 19th century, and after the United States took over the land following the Mexican–American War, it was the largest such grant in California. Not only because of the individual piece of art but also because of the perfect placement. For example, there was a woman walking in the woods and a dog gazing over the water towards the house.

Opening times
Children aged 15 or under must be accompanied by an adult at all times; during a school visit the teacher is in loco parentis. Accompanying adults are responsible for supervising the children in their care at all times. If you haven't already, you may be able to add a guided tour of the house or garden to your visit.
Modern garden (1950–present)
There is a lot to see and you will want to have time to explore the grounds too. If you have kids, you will probably want to take them to the Farmyard and Adventure Playground at Chatsworth Estate. In the farmyard, kids will see ponies and lambs and can take a trailer ride. Then, go in the secret tunnel to the playground where there is a giant rope park, climbing walls, a trampoline, huge slides, zip wire and swings. The formal gardens were larger than many parks that I have been to! If you want to minimize your walking there is a buggy tour that you can catch for a small fee just outside the house.
History of the farmyard
It is one of the finest country houses in the Peak District, drawing countless visitors into its opulent halls every year. It has a complex blend of features from six different centuries, covering 105 acres (0.42 km2). It sits on the eastern side of the valley of the Derwent River and blends into the surrounding park, which covers 1,000 acres (4.0 km2). The woods on the moors to the east of the valley form a backdrop to the garden. Average rainfall is some 33.7 inches (855 mm) a year, with an annual average of 1,160 hours of sunshine.
The Duke believed that the house should be approached from the west and therefore the old stables were pulled down and the architect James Paine was commissioned to design new ones. The trick worked, and in 1694 William III and his wife Mary granted the earl the title 1st Duke of Devonshire. Even more striking is the richly wood-panelled Chapel, barely altered since the 1st Duke’s time, with an ornate altarpiece carved from local alabaster and black marble. A highlight of any visit is the Painted Hall, occupying Bess’s original Elizabethan Great Hall.

The first house to be built on the Chatsworth House site was constructed in 1549 by Bess of Hardwick and her husband Sir William Cavendish. This original estate was notable for its use as a prison for Mary Queen of Scots, who was kept here on several occasions between 1569 and 1584. Little remains of the original structure except the Hunting Tower which still stands on the hill behind Chatsworth House. By the 20th century, Chatsworth was in need of improvements, however the outbreak of the Second World War put these plans on hold, as the building would during wartime be occupied by Penrhos College, a girls’ boarding school. In addition, the 1st Earl of Devonshire played host to the famous English philosopher Thomas Hobbes whom he employed to educate his son, William.
The Duke and Duchess and their three children moved across the park from Edensor House in 1959. Chatsworth House has long been known as a centre for creativity and features art and artefacts that span 4,000 years. Beneath Chatsworth’s half-a-hectare lead roof there are over 300 rooms, 17 staircases, 459 windows and 2,084 lightbulbs. Looking after this stately pile requires the services of housekeepers, plumbers, electricians, seamstresses and joiners. The priceless art objects contained within benefit from the care of curators, archivists, textile conservators and a photo librarian. And that is just the house – outside work gardeners, foresters, gamekeepers, stockmen, farmers, shepherds, river-keepers, brewers and land-agents. The farm shop employs butchers, bakers and fishmongers, and the restaurants have a busy staff of chefs and servers.
The Chatsworth Farm Shop is a large enterprise employing over a hundred.[44][failed verification] A 90-seat restaurant opened at the Farm Shop in 2005. From 1999 to 2003 there was also a shop in the exclusive London district of Belgravia, but it was unsuccessful and closed down. Many of the rooms are recognisable as of one main period, but in nearly every case, they have been altered more often than might be supposed at first glance. Chatsworth House is a stately home in the Derbyshire Dales, 4 miles (6.4 km) north-east of Bakewell and 9 miles (14 km) west of Chesterfield, England.
In May 1944 Kathleen Kennedy, sister of John F. Kennedy, married William Cavendish, Marquess of Hartington, elder son of the 10th Duke of Devonshire. However, he was killed in action in Belgium in September 1944 and Kathleen died in a plane crash in 1948. He was married to Deborah Mitford, one of the Mitford girls, sister to Nancy Mitford, Diana Mitford, Pamela Mitford, Unity Mitford and Jessica Mitford.
